A print for the spring equinox!
The Green Man is a motif found across architecture and art, typically represented as a solitary head with foliage twisting around the face or disgorging from the mouth, nose or eyes.
He is widely believed to be a Pagan mythological symbol for rebirth, regrowth and renewal, and is often associated with the spring equinox. However its roots are much older and its history is not solely associated with British folklore. Versions of his figure have been found across medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire as far back as the 6th century, and in Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece and into India and Southeast Asia in the 2nd century. The idea of seasonal rebirth and tree-folk can even be traced back to Ovid’s poem Metamorphoses, published in the 1st century.
