Emergency Coins (1572)
In the 1570's, Dutch cities were besieged by the Spanish army for revolting against Spanish rule. Many of these cities experienced severe shortages of goods, including money to pay their soldiers. Emergency money was therefore minted using anything that could be found, including scrap gold, silver or even paper.
