The Green Man

£12.00 Coming soon

The Green Man is a motif found across architecture and art, typically represented as a solitary head with foliage twisting around the face.

The exact origin of the Green Man is unknown. The very earliest English examples date back to the 11th century. However, versions of his figure have been found across medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire as far back as the 6th century, and in Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece and into India and Southeast Asia in the 2nd century. The idea of seasonal rebirth and tree-folk can even be traced back to Ovid’s poem Metamorphoses, published in the 1st century.
